Tucson Immigration March/Rally - 4/10/06

There were between 12,000 - 15,000 participants for today's March and Rally for Justice in downtown Tucson. It was an amazing show of solidarity and humanity, and I'm thankful for the presence of Democratic lawmakers of the Tucson City Council and Pima County Supervisors for addressing the crowd and giving support to the cause of human rights.

I was moved to tears with the prayer offered in english and spanish by Roman Catholic Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the Diocese of Tucson. We have to remember the human cost of the broken immigration policies of the United States and realize that we have an obligation to stop the deaths in the desert.

The Republicans were nowhere to be found. Remember that.

An American Flag flown upside down is an official signal of distress.

No protest is complete without food!

An altar was set up to honor those who have died crossing the desert to seek a better life for their families.

A Peace Chain was formed around a group of racist Minutemen who formed a small counter-protest. Things got alittle heated when they burned a Mexican flag, but thankfully no violent confrontations were reported.

A student whose parents are undocumented took the microphone to show support for his family.

Heh.

Proof that I was there. Nice peace sign being flashed by my coworker
